JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The Eastern Oregon University track and field team had a great second day at the NAIA National Championships. Dustin Cloud finished out a quality meet with two more personal records and a ninth place overall finish. Cloud set new PR's in the 60-meter hurdles and the 1000-meter run. The junior used a strong kick to a second place finish in the 1000-meter run. His final point total was 4,510. Over the two days he set five new PR'S, and matched his PR'S in the other two events.
Entering the weight throw, Mitch Wheelhouse was ranked 40th out of 49 competitors and Chris Dilley was ranked fifth. At the end of the day, Dilley was third, matching last year's finish, and Wheelhouse was 13th with a new personal record. Dilley had a very consistent day with most of his marks over his season best, with his best toss at 61'8.5". Wheelhouse broke his personal record with a throw of 55' 5.75".
Today's track events for EOU were all middle distance races and they went very well. First up for the Mountaineers was Alma Garcilazo in the second of two heats in the 800 meters. The top two finishers and the next 4 fastest times advanced to the final (same in the other races). Garcilazo's time of 2:22.36 was well off her PR of 2:15.02, but was well run in the end. Boxed in for most of the race, she broke out of the box with just over 100 meters to go to win by a second.
Next up was the men's 800 meters and Ryan Booth's heat. The sophomore used a fast last few meters to place third in his heat and advance to the final as the number five seed overall with a time of 1:53.17.
The next event was the 1,000-meter run. Jeff Roy hit the auto qualifier in the 800; Eastern chose to use a provisional entry on him in the 1,000. Running in heat two, the 13th seeded, out of 15, the junior won his heat in a well timed 2:30.05. Roy's time was a three second PR, and is the second fastest in school history. Roy enters the final with the second seed.
