Mountaineer Trio Earn All-CCC Honors

Megan Monaghan, Megan Platz and Asheigh Byrne were recognized by the conference for their efforts in 2009.

LA GRANDE, Ore. - Three Eastern Oregon University student-athletes received Cascade Collegiate Conference softball honors, which were announced by the league office Wednesday.

Seniors Megan Monaghan and Megan Platz earned spots on the CCC All-Conference softball team after outstanding seasons at the plate and in the field. Both Platz and Monaghan were also Gold Glove Award winners along with junior Centerfielder Ashleigh Byrne.

Monaghan finished the season ranked in the CCC's top five in RBI (33), Homeruns (9) and total bases (82). 19 of the Second Baseman's 33 RBI came during one amazing week in which, Monaghan hit 5 HR in 8 games and was named CCC Player of the Week for her efforts.

The senior from Mt. Baker, Washington also had a fielding percentage .963 with 81 Assists and 73 Put outs.

Platz finished an amazing career in 2009 by becoming EOU's all-time Homerun queen and receiving All-CCC honors for the second consecutive season. The First Baseman finished her senior campaign a top many of the CCC's statistical categories. Platz was ranked 4th in Slugging % (.667), 4th in Runs Scored (32), 3rd in RBI and second in both Homeruns and Total Bases.

The New Plymouth native also tallied 303 Put outs with a .994 fielding percentage.

Mountaineer newcomer Ashleigh Byrne made an immediate impact in the outfield with her speed and quickness and was recognized by the conference for her efforts. Byrne wound up with 54 Put outs and a fielding percentage of .933 in Centerfield.

Byrne will join eleven other Mountaineer contributors eligible to return in 2010. Next season Eastern will be looking to improve on a 13-29 overall record, including a 5-19 mark in CCC play.
