LA GRANDE, Ore. - The Eastern Oregon University softball team wrapped up their 2008-09 season on May 2nd, in what was one gueling month of play. The Mounties took every challenge head-on and that included 26 games in under a month.
On April 26th the gates at Peggy Anderson Field
closed for the last time in 2009 with a sweep of
Walla Walla University (9-0, 11-0).
The Mounties had some outstanding moments this year. Senior Megan Platz set the school's career homerun mark, while fellow senior Megan Monaghan was named Cascade Collegiate Conference Player of the Week after a week where she hit 5 homeruns and drove in 19 runs in eight games.
That same week, freshman pitcher Suzie Espinoza threw a one-hit shutout where she took a perfect game into the final inning. Eastern's softball team also saw excellent classroom achievements as well, as Platz and fellow seniors Kimmy Peterson and Crystal Weseman were named to the CCC all-academic team.
While the Mounties will be losing seniors Platz, Monaghan, Weseman, Peterson and catcher Hannah Kirk, the Mounties will return their entire staff of pitchers and will look to continue excelling both on the field and off it as well.
