JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. -- The Eastern Oregon University track and field team has sent 10 of its student-athletes to the NAIA National Championships which begins Thursday and runs through Saturday.
Dustin Cloud qualified for the men's heptathlon which begins Thursday at 1 p.m. ET. The junior competed in his first multi-event competition this season and will now compete at the national level. Cloud enters the event seeded 14th after an indoor season-high point total of 4,382 this season.
Kimmy Moore is the other Mountaineer that will participate in a multi-event. The sophomore ranks sixth in the women's pentathlon. The multi-event begins at 1:30 p.m. ET, with the 60 meters. The Noxon, Mont. native scored 3,272 points on Feb. 12 in Boise. That point total became the new school record.
The EOU women's 4x400-meter relay team ends the first day of competition. Melisa Abesa, Grace Deboodt, Orie Gamez, and Moore will run in a prelim heat at 6:30 p.m. The field includes 19 other teams, and the Mountaineers enter ranked 12th.
The men's heptathlon continues Friday morning at 10, and Cloud will conclude his run in the national championships. Chris Dilley and Mitch Wheelhouse begin the Weight Throw preliminary round at 1 p.m. Dilley's season-best toss of 18.25 meters seeds him fifth going into the competition. Wheelhouse punched his ticket to Johnson City in the final regular season meet and is ranked 40th in the 49-athlete field.
Alma Garcilazo's 2:15.02 time at the Boise Team Invitational on Feb. 12, ranks her third in Friday's 800 meters. The event begins its semifinal heats at 4:15 p.m. The men's 800 meter semifinals follows at 4:30 p.m. Ryan Booth enters the event ranked second after shattering the school record by over three seconds this season.
