JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. -- The Eastern Oregon University track and field team had a trio of athletes competing in the final day of the NAIA Indoor National Championships Saturday.
Alma Garcilazo ran in the women's 800 meters and the sophomore battled to end the day as a NAIA All-American in fourth place with a time of 2:15.87. The Umatilla, Ore. native ran a very tactical race, running in the third and fourth spot pretty much the entire race.
Ryan Booth ran in a tightly bunched men's 800 meters. Booth, a sophomore from Post Falls, Idaho, came up just short of an All-American title in seventh place. He got back a bit early and could never open up and get past some of the competition.
Jeff Roy went from a 13th seeded provisional entry, to an All American. Roy used a very strong last 200 meters to come from sixth to third, and set a new school record of 2:27.05 in the men's 1,000-meter run. He broke the old school record set by Adam Goulet in 2006. Roy used some cool headed running to avoid a potential race wrecking box in the first lap to position himself well for the finishing kick. Roy's time is also a six second drop from his provisional qualifying mark, set at the end of January.
Out of the 10 athletes Eastern Oregon took to the national championships, all of them finished in the top 15 of their event, with eight of them finishing in the top 10. Seven finished in the top eight, and three were All-Americans.
