Top Moments of 2009-10: Close Calls

Editor's Note: This is the tenth in an 11-part series recapping the Top 10 sports moments of the 2009-10 year at Eastern Oregon University as compiled by the EOU Sports Information Department. Eastern Oregon University athletics had many memorable moments from the 2009-10 year. These are just a few moments that didn't quite make the list in no particular order.

Women's Basketball Dials in from Long Distance


LA GRANDE, Ore. -- The Eastern Oregon University women's basketball team hit a school record 15 three-pointers en route to an 80-47 victory over Northwest Christian University on Jan. 15.

Every Mountaineer scored in the victory. Eastern finished 56 percent from the field and 57 percent from behind the perimeter. The Beacons jumped out to a 7-2 lead, but the Mountaineers responded with a 24-5 run. The 15 three-pointers ranks third all-time on the Cascade Collegiate Conference list.

Mountaineer Softball Starts Season Solid


ASHLAND, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon University softball team moved to 7-0 to begin the season with a 7-1 Game 1 victory on March 19.

The Mountaineers won their first seven games of the season to have one of the best starts in school history. More impressive all seven victories came on the road to begin the schedule. EOU swept a pair of NCAA Div. 3 opponents, George Fox and Lewis and Clark, to open the year.

Eastern Gains National Attention


The Eastern Oregon University football and men's basketball teams played in NAIA National Games of the Week during their respective seasons.

The Mountaineer football program broke ground for EOU in the school's first ever national game of the week at Carroll College on Oct. 3. The men's basketball team faced off at Oregon Tech on Jan. 22 in a clash of top 20 teams.

Deboodt and Ware Take Conference Honors


Eastern Oregon University student-athletes, Grace Deboodt and Chris Ware, were named Players of the Year in their respective conferences.

Deboodt was named Cascade Collegiate Conference co-Player of the Year win volleyball after a stellar senior season. Ware was tabbed Frontier Conference co-Offensive Player of the Year in football. Alma Garcilazo would later join those two in conference athlete of the year honors.

EOU Harriers Take Eugene


SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- The Eastern Oregon University women's and men's cross country teams had an excellent showing at the Cascade Conference Preview Meet hosted by Northwest Christian University on Sept. 19, 2009.

The Mountaineer men placed first in the team standings after running away from the rest of the field. Eastern's men had four of the top six individual collegiate finishers led by Kody Coxen. The freshman scored second place points after finishing eighth overall.
