KIRKLAND, Wash. – The Eastern Oregon University women's basketball team eased past Northwest University in the first round of the Cascade Collegiate Conference tournament Tuesday night, 90-65.
The Mountaineers (19-9) advance to the tournament semifinals at top-seeded Concordia University Friday. EOU split the regular season meetings with the 22nd ranked Cavaliers (22-9). Each team won on the opposition's court.
Tuesday, Eastern completed the rare feat of beating the same team three times during the season.
Kelsea Hurliman led EOU with 19 points. The sophomore became No. 5 on the Eastern Oregon all-time three-pointers made in a single season list. She hit her 100th three as a Mountaineer Tuesday. The Cloverdale, Ore. native went 5 for 9 from behind the arc and finished 6 of 10 from the field.
Kyle Miller and
Vintea Georges each added 18 points. Miller shot 7 of 10 from the field, while Georges was 5 for 7. The two combined for 13 rebounds.
Shaylee Nielsen was 4 of 7 from three-point range and ended the game with 17 points.
Samantha Flett chipped in nine points, along seven rebounds and seven assists.
The Mountaineers made 29 of their 57 shots from the field, finishing 50 percent from the field. Eastern went 12 of 28 from behind the arc, and 20 of 28 from the free-throw line. EOU held Northwest to 4 of 26 shooting from three-point range. The Eagles were 31 percent from the field and 19 of 27 from the free-throw line.
Eastern's largest lead was 34 points with 6:14 remaining in regulation when Miller made a jumper in the paint. NU's largest lead was three-points to begin the game. The Mountaineers stretched a 20-16 lead to 39-20 over a seven-minute span. EOU led 44-29 at halftime and increased the margin to 30 points over the first nine minutes of the second half.
Kia Gibson had a team-high 19 points to lead Northwest (18-10). She was 7 for 13 from the field with eight rebounds. Marielle McKean added 15 points. The loss ends the Eagles season. NU and Eastern each finished with 41 rebounds. EOU had 20 turnovers to Northwest's 14.
The Mountaineers head to No. 22 Concordia Friday for a 7 p.m. tipoff. CU won the Dec. 30 meeting in La Grande, 93-90. Eastern responded with a 72-64 victory in Portland on Jan. 29. The Cavaliers knocked off eighth-seeded Northwest Christian Tuesday, 75-62.
