ASHLAND, Ore. – (Full Results) For the first time since 2007, the Eastern Oregon University men's track and field team won the Cascade Collegiate Conference Championship presented by U.S. Bank. The men scored 165 points for the meet. EOU's women team finished in third place with 106 points.
Out of the entire meet, only six events did not produce a NAIA qualifying mark. On the men's side, The top three teams had never before been separated by less than 12 points, and never less than 76 points over the last seven seasons.
Winning the first men's championship of the day was
Logan Reardon in the javelin. On his first throw, Reardon recorded a distance of 56.53 meters (185-5) to hit the NAIA "B" standard. His first throw held up to win the event, scoring ten points for the Mountaineers.
Claiming his second event championship on the weekend was
Travis Simpson, this time in the triple jump. Simpson jumped 14.45 meters (47-5) to win the event. With the victory, Simpson defended his triple jump championship from last season. For his performance this weekend, Simpson was named the CCC Field Athlete of the Meet. He won the high-jump title Friday, defended his triple-jump title Saturday, and also placed fourth in the long jump.
Hans Roelle, the defending NAIA 800 meter champion, defended his 800 meter CCC title on Saturday. In a loaded field, Roelle sat in the middle of the pack for the first lap of the race. With around 250 meters left in the race, Roelle made his move and pulled away to win the event. He ran a time of 1:51.58 in the event.
The Mountaineers men's team took the lead in the penultimate race of the day, going from third place to first, and up five on SOU, after scoring 18 points in the 5,000 meters.
Isaac Updike placed second, DJ Flores was third and
Lucas Updike was fifth to vault the Mountaineers into the lead.
Junior,
Ryan Rosenau ran a school record in the 400 meter hurdles as he clocked a time of 52.88 to finish second in the event. Rosenau was the Track Athlete of the Meet after scoring in four events: the decathlon (first place), 110-meter hurdles (second), 400-meter hurdles (second), and long jump (sixth).
Finishing third in the men's triple jump, and scoring seven points for EOU, was
Julian Ford. Ford collected a jump of 13.57 meters (44-6 ¼).
The Mountaineers placed three in the men's shot put, scoring eight points for the team. Finishing in fifth place was
Jason Hendricks with a throw of 14.01 meters (45-11 ¾). Reardon followed in sixth place with a throw of 13.71 meters (44-11 ¾) and
Tanner Yarbrough finished eighth with a throw of 13.35 meters (43-9 ¾).
Head Coach
Ben Welch was named the CCC Men's Coach of the Year.
Defending her CCC Pole Vault title was
Talitha Fagen on the women's side of the meet. Fagen cleared a height of 3.80 meters (12-5 ½) setting a new school record for EOU, to win the event.
Finishing second in the women's 400 hurdles was
Ashanna Hodge, running a time of 1:01.02. With that time, Hodge set the EOU school record and improved her "A" standard. Hodge also finished third in the triple jump. She collected a jump of 11.40 meters (37-5). She missed the school record in the triple jump by one centimeter.
Kendall Current finished second in the 100 meter run with a time of 12.39. She was edged at the line by Nicole DeGrange. Current, also finished fourth in the 200 meter run with a time of 25.59.
In the women's shot put,
Marta Stangel finished third with a throw of 12.64 meters (41-5 ¾).
