No. 13 Women’s Wrestling takes 5th at Cliff Keen WCTOC

ROCKLIN, Calif. – In the Eastern Oregon women's wrestling team's first four tournament appearances this season, EOU has established itself adequately by placing each time in the top five among other programs.

On Saturday at the West Coast Tournament of Champions in Rocklin, California, the Blue and Gold tabbed their third consecutive fifth place finish this season. Of the six grapplers who contended, five carried out top-six placements.

Leading the way for the Mountaineers was freshman Leah Olsen (109-lb), who captured 15 team points and went on to go 4-1. After receiving a bye in the first round, Olsen faced off against Menlo College's Alexa Sanchez-Christoforatos in the quarterfinals, defeating her by tech fall 12-0

Cody Pfau, the No.1 grappler for Emmanuel College took out the freshman by pin in the first period. Bouncing back right away, Olsen received her fifth tournament triumph over Southern Oregon's Nikki Mae Sumagang in a 6-5 decision to advance to the third place match.

Meeting for the second time with Oaks Sanchez- Christoforatos, Olsen prevailed once again as the freshman bagged her fourth pin fall (4:39) and improved to 9-10 for the season.

Junior Jessica DeHart's (116-lb) two wins secured her a fourth place after defeating Olivia Iopollo in the quarterfinals and winning by decision over Mikayla Abe in the consolation semifinals.  Saturday's performance puts Dehart  at 4-5 in tournament play. The Hood River native fell to Victoria Guiterrez in the third round and Alexis Encinas for the third place match.

EOU's third placer of the day was Alexis Cavero at 155 pounds. Cavero began the day falling to Alyvia Fiske then defeated Celycia Sandoval by fall (1:38) of Menlo College. In round three of the consolations, the freshman allowed just two points to roll over Ophelia Lara by technical fall 12-2.

Evonne Evien of Menlo College then handed the freshman her second defeat with a 12-0 tech fall. In the final match, the Californian picked up her eighth pin fall making this her second quickest of the season over teammate Renay Monohan.

The Mountaineers two other placers included: Madisen Bozovich (6th – HWT class) and Monohan (6th – 155 pounds). As a team, the women had the fourth best winning percentage (58%) of the tournament with their 18 victories.

EOU is now on winter break, with the Mounties next seeing action the first week of January at the NWCA National Duals in Fort Wayne, Ind.
